Sinners (Ryan Coogler, 2025)
Sinners opens with a card reading « Clarksdale, Mississippi — October 15, 1932 ». Two twin brothers, both played by Michael B. Jordan, come home from working for the Chicago mob, buy an abandoned sawmill and open a juke joint. It made more than $200 million in the United States and Canada in under a month — the first original film to do that in almost a decade.
It was not filmed here. Principal photography began in New Orleans on 14 April 2024 and wrapped on 17 July; the production spent $67.6 million on location in Louisiana. Ryan Coogler has said he had never been to Mississippi before the research for this film.
That distinction is the whole point of this page. Clarksdale is written about, sung about and set-dressed constantly. It is filmed in far less often.
Christone « Kingfish » Ingram, a Clarksdale native, appears in the film.

And then it came home
Clarksdale has no active movie theatre. A town of fourteen thousand people, whose name opens the film, had no way to watch it.
Tyler Yarbrough, a Clarksdale native, published an open letter on behalf of an intergenerational group of local organisations, creatives, entrepreneurs and farmers, inviting Coogler and the cast to town and offering to co-host a public screening. Reported first by Capital B, the letter went viral.
Coogler and Warner Bros answered. On 29 May 2025, as part of a three-day festival called Clarksdale Cultural Capital, residents saw the film free of charge in the civic auditorium. Coogler introduced both the 11am and the 5pm screenings. Zinzi Coogler, composer Ludwig Göransson, producer Sev Ohanian and Miles Caton attended. When the opening card appeared, the room erupted. When Kingfish appeared on screen, it erupted again.
Outside the New Roxy — once a Black movie theatre, now a music venue — a sign read « Welcome to Clarksdale, Sinners Festival ». Ground Zero served Sinners-themed drinks: the Smokestack, the Dance with the Devil, the Juke Joint Julep.
